Australia-New Zealand child support agreement likely by July

9 March 2000

The reciprocal child support agreement with Australia has been tabled in Australia's Commonwealth Parliament, which means it is on track to come into effect on 1 July. The next step is for the agreement to be signed by both countries. New Zealand has already paved the way legislatively for the agreement, and will give effect to it by Order in Council. The agreement will allow Australia to enforce payment of child support from New Zealanders living in Australia who are financially liable for children in New Zealand, and New Zealand will likewise be able to enforce payment from Australians living here. Each country will also be able to supply the other with details of a liable parent's income.
